As social workers worldwide commemorate Social Work Month and International Social Work Day (ISWD) 2026, the Nigeria Association of Social Workers (NASoW), Lagos State Chapter, has called for stronger collective action to address growing divisions in society.
This year’s theme, “Co-Building Hope and Harmony: A Harambee Call to Unite a Divided Society,” emphasizes the need for individuals, communities, institutions, and governments to work together to promote unity, inclusion, and social wellbeing.
Speaking on the significance of the theme, the Chairperson of NASoW Lagos State Chapter, Mrs. Modupeola Sahid-Adebambo, noted that many of the social challenges facing society today are fueled by increasing divisions within families, workplaces, and communities.
According to her, “Our society is experiencing different forms of division from family conflicts and political polarization to ethnic, religious, and social discrimination. These divisions weaken relationships and affect the wellbeing of individuals and communities. As social workers, we believe that building hope and harmony requires dialogue, understanding, and collective responsibility.”
Mrs. Sahid-Adebambo emphasized that the concept of Harambee, a Swahili word meaning “pulling together,” reflects the importance of collaboration in addressing social problems and strengthening communities.
As part of activities to mark Social Work Month 2026, the NASoW Lagos Chapter will be engaging in media appearances and school outreach programmes across Lagos State. These activities are aimed at raising public awareness about pressing social issues and promoting values of unity, respect, and peaceful coexistence.
Through the media engagements, social workers will discuss critical social issues affecting families and communities, while the school outreach programmes will focus on educating and empowering students with positive values that promote understanding, tolerance, and responsible citizenship.
Mrs. Sahid-Adebambo further called on government institutions, community leaders, civil society organizations, and citizens to support efforts aimed at strengthening families and promoting social cohesion.
“Addressing the challenges in our society requires all of us to work together. When we promote empathy, respect our differences, and support one another, we create stronger communities and a more peaceful society,” she said.
She also reaffirmed the commitment of NASoW Lagos to advancing professional social work practice and advocating for the protection and wellbeing of vulnerable individuals and families.
As the world celebrates International Social Work Day 2026, NASoW Lagos encourages everyone to embrace the spirit of co-building hope and harmony, recognizing that sustainable social development can only be achieved when societies work together for the common good.
