Tinubu Greets Kola Oyewo, Veteran Thespian, Distinguished Cultural Icon at 80

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu extends his heartfelt congratulations to Alagba Kola Oyewo, a renowned filmmaker, actor, and retired lecturer of Theatre Arts at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, on his 80th birthday.

President Tinubu describes Oyewo as a national treasure and a worthy ambassador of Yoruba theatre and Nigerian storytelling.

“Oyewo is a veteran thespian and a distinguished cultural icon whose enduring contributions to the growth of Nigeria’s theatre, film, and cultural productions have left an indelible mark on generations of artistes and scholars”, President Tinubu writes.

“From the stage to the screen and the classroom, Oyewo’s work reflects a deep commitment to preserving and promoting Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.

“His brilliance, discipline, and dedication have not only elevated the standards of performing arts in Nigeria but have also inspired countless young talents to pursue excellence in the creative industry.

“Your remarkable career stands as a testament to the power of art as a tool for education, national identity, and social cohesion.

“May you experience good health, peace, and fulfilment, as your legacy continues to inspire present and future generations,” the President adds.

He was born on 26 March 1946 at Oba Ile, a town in Osun State, South West (Nigeria).

He began acting as a professional in 1964 after he joined the “Oyin Adejobi theatre group” and the first role he played was Adejare in Orogun Adedigba, which was Oyin Adejobi’s autobiography.

After he spent nine years with Oyin Adejobi, he joined the University of Ife theatre, where he worked with the late veteran dramatist and scholar, chief Ola Rotimi.

Kola Oyewo was known for the role he played as “Odewale” in The Gods Are Not To Blame, a drama by Ola Rotimi, Saworo Ide, and Agogo Ewo.

In 1996, Oyewo joined the services of Obafemi Awolowo University, where he rose to the rank of senior lecturer before retiring in September 2011.

After his retirement from Obafemi Awolowo University, he joined the services of Redeemer’s University, where he currently serves as head of the department of dramatic art.

He is currently working at Elizade University Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State as a performing arts lecturer.
