The Leader of the Senate, Distinguished Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, CON, played a pivotal role in the successful inauguration of Ekiti State Governor, His Excellency Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, for a second term in office, describing the occasion as a historic milestone in the state’s political development.
The week’s engagements culminated in the swearing-in ceremony on Saturday, October 16, 2026, at the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion in Ado-Ekiti. The event marked a historic milestone in the state’s democratic journey, as Governor Oyebanji became the first governor in Ekiti State’s 30-year history to secure re-election and return to office for a second consecutive term.
On arrival at the Ekiti Agro-Allied Cargo Airport, Senator Bamidele and his entourage were received amid palpable excitement and jubilation among residents. He subsequently proceeded to the Governor’s Office, where final preparations for the inauguration and other related engagements were underway.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, was represented at the ceremony by Vice President Kashim Shettima, GCON. The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, also led a delegation of distinguished senators to the historic event, while Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State led members of the Progressive Governors Forum.
Other dignitaries included the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, CFR, and the host monarch, the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adeyemo Adejugbe Aladesanmi III, alongside other traditional rulers, political leaders, government officials and stakeholders from across the country.
Bamidele appreciates stakeholders, Tinubu’s support
Senator Bamidele, who served as Chairman of the State Campaign Council for Governor Oyebanji’s re-election, expressed profound appreciation to stakeholders within and outside Ekiti State whose support contributed to the governor’s electoral victory and the successful inauguration.
He particularly acknowledged the fatherly support and guidance of President Tinubu in the weeks and days preceding the June 20, 2026, governorship election, noting that the President’s encouragement contributed to the successful political engagement that culminated in Oyebanji’s re-election.
The Leader of the Senate called on the people of Ekiti State to rally behind the governor as he begins his second term, stressing the need for continuity in governance, effective service delivery and the consolidation of development programmes that directly improve citizens’ welfare.
He urged the governor to sustain his people-oriented policies and statesmanship, while ensuring that the confidence reposed in his administration translates into tangible socioeconomic progress across the state.
Senator Bamidele also commended Oyebanji for prioritising the completion of inherited projects rather than abandoning them. He cited the Ekiti Agro-Allied Cargo Airport as an example of the importance of continuity in public infrastructure development, emphasising that completing strategic projects is essential to unlocking economic opportunities and delivering value for public investment.
Second term must deliver industrialisation, jobs — Bamidele
At a thanksgiving service held on Sunday, October 18, 2026, at the Cathedral Church of Emmanuel, Anglican Communion, Okesa, Ado-Ekiti, Senator Bamidele challenged the governor to make his second term a defining period for Ekiti State’s economic transformation.
He cautioned against the negative perception that a second term in office provides an opportunity for political officeholders to enrich themselves, urging Oyebanji instead to use the renewed mandate to accelerate industrialisation, attract private investment and expand employment opportunities.
According to the Leader of the Senate, the administration should place particular emphasis on creating an enabling environment for industries and businesses to thrive, with the ultimate objective of generating sustainable jobs and empowering the state’s growing youth population.
He stressed that the governor’s second term presents an opportunity to build on the achievements of his first administration while pursuing more ambitious economic development initiatives capable of improving household incomes and strengthening the state’s productive capacity.
The thanksgiving service provided another opportunity for political leaders, religious authorities and residents to reflect on the governor’s electoral victory and the responsibilities accompanying his renewed mandate.
Oyebanji pledges to heed advice, seeks investment partnerships
In his response, Governor Oyebanji expressed appreciation to Senator Bamidele for his support, counsel and commitment to the success of his administration. He pledged to take the Senate Leader’s advice seriously and work towards translating the renewed mandate into improved living conditions for the people of Ekiti State.
The governor also encouraged individuals, corporate organisations and investors to identify and bring viable investment opportunities to the state, assuring them of the importance of collaboration in advancing Ekiti’s economic prospects.
He appealed to traditional rulers and communities to support land access for legitimate investment and industrial development, noting that cooperation among government, traditional institutions and local communities would be critical to attracting businesses and creating employment.
Oyebanji further called on the people of Ekiti State to support President Tinubu’s re-election bid in the forthcoming 2027 general elections. He argued that the President’s administration had demonstrated considerable goodwill towards Ekiti through development initiatives and improved access to federal support.
A renewed mandate, greater expectations
Governor Oyebanji’s return to office presents both an endorsement of his first-term performance and an opportunity to meet higher expectations from the electorate.
For Senator Bamidele, the significance of the historic inauguration extends beyond the political achievement of securing a second term. It lies in the capacity of the renewed mandate to deliver measurable improvements in infrastructure, industrial development, employment generation and citizens’ welfare.
As Ekiti State begins this new chapter, the call for sustained collaboration among federal and state authorities, investors, traditional institutions and citizens underscores the need to transform political goodwill into practical development outcomes.
The ultimate measure of the administration’s success will be its ability to translate continuity in leadership into inclusive economic growth, expanded opportunities for young people and a better quality of life for the people of Ekiti State.
