Abuja Continental Hotel Defends Staff Welfare Package, Urges Dialogue Over Labour Dispute

Abuja Continental Hotel has reiterated that employee welfare and dignity remain central to its operations, even as it calls for dialogue as the only acceptable path to resolving labour matters.

Niyi Agoro, Cluster Director, Human Resources, Continental Hotel Group in a statement said the hotel fully respects the constitutional right to freedom of association, but maintains that such choices must be free, voluntary and without coercion.

“The workers spoke unequivocally in the presence of the TUC that they needed no union representation. The blockade did not represent their interests,” Agoro disclosed.

He explained that Abuja Continental’s labour philosophy is anchored on respect, due process and protection of workers’ interests. Employee welfare, he said, is a strategic pillar — not an afterthought.

“Our objective is to create an environment where colleagues feel valued, respected, heard, supported and empowered to thrive. We accord employee experience the same importance as guest experience,” he said.

Agoro listed several welfare initiatives in place for staff:

– Comprehensive healthcare coverage including a staff clinic with night-shift services

– Staff transportation and accommodation facilities with recent upgrades to layover rooms and transport capacity

– Two daily meals with multiple options

– Occupational health and safety measures

– Childcare support, mental-health sensitisation, and enhanced parental-leave provisions

Beyond basic benefits, he said the hotel invests heavily in career growth through a Recognition of Excellence programme, competency-based career frameworks, learning platforms and leadership development.

To ensure staff voices are heard, Management runs monthly Town Hall Meetings, departmental HR sessions, and a confidential Employee Opinion Survey that feeds directly into decision-making.

“Remuneration is also reviewed consistently against market realities, cost-of-living, and industry benchmarks,” Agoro noted. “A responsible employer must do more than comply with the law. We must build sustainable careers for our people.”

While condemning Monday’s blockade as “reckless and avoidable,” Agoro said Management remains committed to dialogue.

“We believe in resolution through responsible, lawful and constructive engagement. Intimidation or obstruction has no place in a professional relationship,” he said.

He concluded by reassuring guests that the hotel’s focus remains on service excellence and people development. “When our people are well, our guests feel it. Abuja Continental will continue to deliver the five-star experience our patrons expect.”
